We were pretty proud when the 2016 Ford F-150 was the only truck to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and now our favorite midsize sedan has just proven itself equally stalwart against the dangers of the road, and more so. The 2017 Ford Fusion earned a Top Safety Pick+.

Remember how the biggest deciding factor in the safety of the F-150 compared to other trucks was the small-overlap crash test? When an oncoming car drifts over the center line, and only strikes a small part of the front of your vehicle, it can incur serious damage by bypassing most vehicles' frontal safety systems. In the trucks, this could lead to serious leg injuries.

The Ford Fusion was only rated as "acceptable" on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor for the small overlap test of the 2016 model. The newly-redesigned 2017 Fusion, however, has a reinforced front end that will protect your legs and feet (and the rest of you!) to earn a good rating.

The 2017 Fusion can also do something its truck stablemate cannot.

Its improved frontal-collision-prevention system was able to automatically brake and prevent a crash from 12mph and 25mph. The F-150's system will give a warning, and pre-charge the brakes, but cannot brake on its own... yet.
