The results of IIHS's large pickup small-overlap crash test were just released earlier this week -- and you won't like them.
The videos of the crash-test process paint a gristly picture that large trucks simply are not as safe as you may believe.
Why would we post about something so morbid, then? Because there was one truck that was just as tough as advertised, and that was the 2016 Ford F-150.
Last year, the 2015 F-150 scored well for the SuperCrew body style, but unfortunately suffered the same weakness as many of this year's competitors in the SuperCab style. For 2016, Ford corrected this chink in the armor to win Top Safety Pick for both cab styles.
"Ford is leading the way among large pickup manufacturers when it comes to protecting people in a range of crashes and offering technology to warn drivers of imminent frontal crashes," says the IIHS Vehicle Research Center's vice president, Raul Arbelaez. "We commend Ford for taking last year's test results to heart and upgrading protection for SuperCab occupants in small overlap crashes."
No other 2016 pickup tested has received a Top Safety Pick, due to moderate and severe cabin intrusions which would result in severe injury to the driver's legs, ankles, and feet in a small-overlap collision.
