Smoking tires has always been a badge of motorsport-enthusiast pride. It takes know-how and finesse to do it right without wrecking your transmission. Unless you have an electronic line-lock system, like professional drag racers do.
Line lock very simply freezes up the brakes on the front axle, allowing the rear wheels (of a rear-wheel drive vehicle) to spin freely, creating billowing plumes of white smoke as the car stays safely in place. No fussing with the brakes, just a simple button push.
Electronic line-lock has previously been available on the high-performance V8 Mustang GT, but on the 2018 Ford Mustang, it will be standard on all models. Mustang marketing manager Mark Schaller explains:
"We introduced line-lock on EcoBoost Mustangs because we didn’t want those customers to miss out. The number of people choosing EcoBoost power continues to grow globally, and with the increased torque and new features coming on the new Mustang, customers will not be disappointed."
In other words, even the more efficient of the Mustang models now has enough power—320 pound-feet of torque—to overcome the friction of the tires and burn rubber.
