Redesigned Cup Holders Contain Drinks both Large and Small

No longer will your beverage size of choice be constrained by the shape of your cup holder! The Ford Fusion is getting an all-new redesign for 2017, with new safety and semi-autonomous technology features, new exterior styling, and best of all, new cup holders.

These cup holders have possibly been more thoughtfully engineered than any other cup holder in history. Ford first researched what types of beverages and items people are placing in cup holders, and determined that the three most popular container types are 16-ounce water bottles, 20-ounce juice bottles, and 30-ounce fast-food drinks.

Then, Ford used RUTH, a tactical robot-arm, to test the resistance grips to ensure they were exerting just the right amount of pressure on the various-sized beverage containers.

A new Nielson survey reports that around 50 percent of drivers put their cell phones and other devices in the cup holder, so Ford also added a pocket to the front console for storing small items.
